This weekend sees my paintings coming off the walls of Waterside Gym and finding their way back to Brooklyn Studios where they will be added to later this week by the work returning home from Nelsons Wine Bar. The studio walls are going to be quite laden by the time the Open Studios begins on Friday 3 July. Here's a tiny painting entitled "A Built Environment" that was shown at Nelsons. It's a mixed media piece: acrylic paint, drawing ink and collage. It will be back at Brooklyn studio this weekend...if it hasn't sold!

Closed Mon - Wed Closed Calder Gallery, 20 Market Steet, Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom HX7 6AA 01422 843832 I have lots of new work on display in the underground wine bar, Nelsons. I'm sharing the space again with Deb Wilkes whose work is mainly in oils. You'll find the bar on Crown Street in Hebden Bridge. Here's a link to their FB page if you want to find out what's on: https://www.facebook.com/nelsons.hebdenbridge Here's a painting, shown on the studio table from a few weeks ago. It is now hanging in the wine bar and is entitled "Moon Garden". I have a few recent paintings, some still on the easel, some just about finished. Here are some shots from my mobile: Whilst doing ceramics, my 3D work was inspired by letterforms. This inclination has now re-emerged in my painting in the form of text grabbed from a variety of sources. It could be a rich vein.
I've given provisional titles, these may change. The walls of my workspace are rather empty so I've started to work on several new paintings. Here are some snapshots of work, some of which are well on the way to completion. Please pardon the quality of the images as they were taken on my mobile...
Well it's starting to feel as if Spring has sprung... and I'm feeling a bit more lively : ) It's surprising what a little bit of sun can do...
I was recently invited to put some work on the walls of the Robin Hood Pub at Cragg Vale. So I plundered the walls of the studio and off I went with a box packed up with 14 bubble wrapped works yesterday morning bright and early (well 10am is early for me to be out doing on a Sunday morning!) It took about an hour to hang so I was away before the first of the customers for Sunday lunch arrived, I'd like to have stayed but had work to do now that the studio walls are rather empty! Brooklyn Open Studios Festive Open Weekend- 6 and 7 DecemberWhat a lovely weekend! We had a steady stream of visitors throughout the day and it all helped me to feel part of the little community at Brooklyn. These photos were taken on the day by my studio neighbour, Sue. Photos below show the preps running up to the weekend.
I submitted four paintings from which the selection panel were able to choose and was pleased to have three accepted. I was a little bemused as the one they rejected is one of my favourites- "Coal Hills". This was a 'lost' painting that I retrieved from a dusty frame at the back of my incomplete/unresolved/work in progress stash. See image at bottom of post. And here are the three that they liked.... Possibly in order of merit... 1. "Warm Shoes", 2. "Pink Pot" and 3. "Paddock" Hrumph, can you see the red spot against the oil painting "Warm Shoes"? I was so pleased! although sorry to say goodbye too. "Coal Hills", painted last year and temporarily misplaced!
I'm on the move again and starting to feel a bit rootless! This time, I hope I'll be staying a good while ; ) I am in the process of leaving the Birchcliffe Centre and moving into Brooklyn Studios in Hebden Bridge. Here are a couple of shots of the space which I'm currently making ready for the deluge of materials/furniture/books/ paintings etc, etc, etc, that will soon be crammed in with a shoehorn or hammer! This is a smaller space than my last and therefore I'm going to have to seriously sort through and get rid of stuff which is surplus to requirements!! As a serial collector of things that 'might come in one day' this is a very painful exercise : ( Here's the full address:
BROOKLYN STUDIOS Unit 3 38 Hangingroyd Lane - the entrance is actually on Baker's Street, look for the bright red door : ) Hebden Bridge HX7 7DD Once settled, I may just have a mini open studio, tbc! And later, I hope to take part in the Festive Open Weekend at Brooklyn. As before, studio visits by appointment are very welcome.... just not for a wee while, unless you're prepared to roll up your sleeves!! |
